Separate rent from variable bills
Rent is usually a predictable monthly cost, while electricity, water, heating, and other utilities can change. Treating them as separate categories makes the household budget easier to understand.
Record the due date and payer for every recurring bill so no one has to remember the arrangement from month to month.
Agree on a rent-sharing rule
Equal rent is straightforward when bedrooms and common areas are similar. If rooms differ substantially, roommates may agree to a different allocation. The method should be agreed before the lease period becomes a source of conflict.

Track household purchases
Groceries, cleaning supplies, internet, and shared subscriptions can create dozens of small transactions. Assign each purchase to the household and identify who paid for it.

Settle on a schedule
Choose a regular settlement day, such as the first weekend of each month. This keeps small balances from accumulating indefinitely and gives everyone a predictable routine.
