Start with reliable income
List the household income you can reasonably expect during the planning period. If income varies, use a conservative planning approach and keep irregular income separate until it is actually available.
Do not build essential obligations around money that is uncertain.
List essential expenses
Record housing, utilities, food, transportation, insurance, healthcare, education, debt payments, and other necessary costs. Use recent records where possible instead of guessing.
The first draft does not need to be perfect. It needs to be realistic enough to reveal the household’s baseline.
Add flexible and irregular costs
Include dining, entertainment, shopping, travel, gifts, repairs, annual renewals, and other less frequent expenses. Ignoring these costs can make a budget look balanced until the bill arrives.
Convert predictable annual costs into monthly planning amounts if that makes them easier to fund.
Assign money to goals
Choose a small number of meaningful goals and give them planned contributions. Then review whether the remaining flexible spending supports those priorities.
A budget is not just a record of the past; it is a plan for allocating future resources.
